Call :: Creative Nonfiction Sunday Short Reads

Creative Nonfiction magazine is accepting submissions for their Sunday Short Reads email—previously unpublished work up to 1,000 words, with a deadline of August 1. Managing Editor Hattie Fletcher offers this editorial tip: “We’re open to stories on any subject, any style, but one of the questions we ask ourselves before accepting a story is, ‘Would we feel good about emailing this out to 8,500+ readers first thing on a Sunday morning?'” There is a $3 submission fee, waived for subscribers; pays $50 on publication, and all submissions are also considered for publication in CNF magazine.

Call :: Dear Queer: Letters in Solidarity with LGBTIQ+ Youth

Broadsided Press started Broadsided Responds to show support and solidarity in response to global crises. Dear Queer: Letters in Solidarity with LGBTIQ+ Youth seeks to “stand with the LGBTIQ+ community and all those who call them/us family.” Writers are invited to share “short works that reach out toward any – past or present, self or other – who has needed support, solace, or a sense of being seen and known . . . writing from voices who might wish to speak to their own younger selves (and, by extension, the younger selves of today).” Poems of 30 lines or less or flash prose under 300 words with the title “Letter to my __________” that provide hope, solace, pathways, and a sense of solidarity are welcome through July 4, 2022. There is a $3 VOLUNTARY entry fee, but please see the incredible work this all-volunteer organization has done over the years and support financially if you can.

Call :: Creative Nonfiction Becoming a Nurse

Creative Nonfiction magazine seeks submissions for a special expanded anniversary edition of I Wasn’t Strong Like This When I Started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse. They are looking for pandemic-era stories dramatically and vividly written by and about nurses which examine the complex and essential role nurses of all kinds have played in providing care and guidance for patients and families, as well as the ways in which the pandemic has affected both individuals and the healthcare system. Previously unpublished, narrative form, with scenes, description, vivid characters, and a distinctive voice, 1000-4000 words. This is a paying market. All submissions will be considered for the book and might also be considered for other CNF projects. There is no submission fee for this category. Deadline: Monday, June 27, 2022.

Call :: Black Memoirs Matter

Committed to sharing stories that need to be told, Memoir Magazine is accepting memoir and creative nonfiction by writers of African descent – all writers of the African Diaspora, regardless of country of origin or residence – for their upcoming anthology Black Memoirs Matter. “Our goal,” the editors say, “is to chronicle the global Black Experience through memoir. At the same time, we are looking for universal truths that transcend race, like mental health, self-love, parenting, etc.” Submissions should be 500-4k words, written in the first person, with simultaneous and previously published works welcome. “We seriously encourage emerging and unpublished writers to apply.” Acceptance pays $50 honorarium and a print version of the anthology. There is a $25 fee with all entries also considered for standard nonfiction publication in Memoir Magazine. Deadline: August 31, 2022.

Leaders Igniting Generational Healing and Transformation (LIGHT) is calling for submissions of art, letters, stories, poetry, and other creative works for the first issue of our biannual literary journal in public health. True Story is Coming Back!

Creative Nonfiction has announced its journal for long-form nonfiction, True Story, is officially making its comeback this year. In fact, they are currently seeking submissions of essays between 5,000 and 10,000 words through April 30, 2022.

Each issue will feature one exceptional work of creative nonfiction and will be distributed in print and digitally. Writers whose essays are selected for publication will receive $750 and 10 free copies of “their” issue.

There is a $3 reading fee which is waived for current True Story and/or Creative Nonfiction subscribers.

The Caribbean Writer (TCW)—Where the Caribbean Imagination Embraces the World—is an international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus, founded in 1986 and published annually by the University of the Virgin Islands. TCW features new and exciting voices from the region, and beyond, that explores the diverse and multi-ethnic culture in poetry, short fiction, personal essays, creative nonfiction, and short plays. Publications for Young Writers

NewPages maintains two guides where young readers and writers can find print and online literary magazines to read, places to publish their own works, and legitimate contests: Publications for Young Writers and Writing Contests for Young Writers. Both of these are ad-free resources regularly updated with carefully vetted content.

Many of the magazines listed on NewPages Publications for Young Writers include resources to inspire and mentor writing. One such publication is the Young Writers Project that features a full year’s worth of writing and visual art “Challenges.” These are organized by week, with all entries in response to these prompts being considered for various publications, including the monthly digital magazine, The Voice, as well as for the YWP annual anthology.

In addition to this, YWP’s Community Journalism Project runs weekly prompts based on “newsy, issue-based challenges” as well as a special Climate Change Project.

These are wonderful resources for teachers to use in the classroom as well as for anyone mentoring young readers or writers in their lives.

Girls Right the World Seeks Submissions

NewPages maintains two guides where young readers and writers can find print and online literary magazines to read, places to publish their own works, and legitimate contests: Publications for Young Writers and Writing Contests for Young Writers. Both of these are ad-free resources regularly updated with carefully vetted content.

Girls Right the World is one of those listed, their mission is to provide an “an international literary journal advocating for young, female-identified writers and artists. This journal values and promotes diversity of culture and expression.” The publication is edited by students at Miss Hall’s School in Massachusetts. Currently, Girls Right the World has extended their deadline for submissions.

Female-identified writers and artists, ages 14–21, are invited to submit poetry, prose, and visual art of any style or theme for consideration for the sixth annual issue by January 31, 2022. For full submission information, visit their site here.

The First Line 2022 Lines Announced!

Everything starts the same, but it all ends differently. The First Line is a print literary magazine that is unaffiliated, unfunded, unassuming, and works hard to be inspiring. Each year they offer four writing prompts. All pieces submitted must start with these lines. Where they go from there is dependent on you.

TCW is especially inviting artwork to grace the next cover and interior sections of Volume 36 under the 2021 theme: “Disruption, Disguise and Illuminations.” Increasingly, as history meets day to day experiences, epiphanies unfold. And as we self-interrogate the disruption motifs in many of these illuminations, the roots of prevailing disruptions emerge, complicated by disguise. We’re exploring the widest permutations.
