Magazine Stand :: Chestnut Review – Summer 2024

Chestnut Review’s Summer 2024 Issue ushers in a new season at the magazine, Volume Six, Year Six (6:1). Editor-in-Chief James Rawlings’ interview with Chestnut Review Chapbooks author, Javeria Hasnain (SIN), opens this issue with cover art by Jules Ostara whose wild and unpredictable, “Ink Flowers,” sets the scene for stubborn artists and writers.

Contributors also include writers Esther Ra, Beth Anstandig, Em Townsend, Elane Kim, Chiwenite Onyekwelu, Alvin Kathembe, Nikki Ummel, Iyanuoluwa Adenle, Adamu Yahuza Abdullahi, Audrey Gamache, Andrew Nickerson, Caroline Beuley, Chidera Solomon Anikpe, J. L. Bermúdez, and art by David Sheskin, Roger Camp, Anselmo Alliegro, and Charles Byrne.

Readers are immersed in work that examines tensions with family, forgiveness, queerness, religion, astronomy, grief, childhood, animals, gothic, natural spaces, city streets, girlhood, and—as always—humanity. Like the chestnut trees that persist, this summer issue values the stubborn belief in each individual’s own worth, in the art of their hands, eyes, and mind.

Magazine Stand :: Chestnut Review – Autumn 2023

In the autumn 2023 issue of Chestnut Review online, artists and writers come together to contend with embodiment, relationships with the medical system, perception, love, and other pressing themes. This issue features a conversation with Erin Little, poetry by Tyler Raso, prose by Nicole Hazan, art by Shee Gomes, and so much more for readers to enjoy.

Chestnut Review 4.4 (Spring 2023) rounds out the publication’s fourth year as a literary journal and is the final installment of Volume 4. This issue features poetry, prose, and art that reckon with desire, time, and illness, amongst other themes. The cover art, which aligns with parts of the publication’s ethos and aesthetic, is a digital piece titled “Inhibition” by Grace Zhou. The issue opens with a celebration of the release of Dacia Price’s This is for the Naming with an excerpt from the 2022 Prose Chapbook Contest winner and an interview with the author. The poetry portion of the issue opens with a piece by Noor Hindi, titled “I’m Bored I’m Lonely I’m Throwing a Party,” which contends with beauty, mortality, and divinity. A graphic comic is featured, called “tanggal,” inspired by the penanggalan folklore of Malaysia, which explores the nature of change through its hybrid-format. Chestnut Review welcomes readers to enjoy the experience of their newest issue online.

Magazine Stand :: Chestnut Review – Fall 2022

Chestnut Review online literary magazine Autumn 2022 issue cover image

I feel as though I know Chestnut Review almost better than any other literary magazine out there because of how much they are constantly doing both in the larger literary community and in creating a community of “stubborn artists” of their own. In addition to their quarterly, online publication and print annual, they are currently planning a January retreat in Mexico (one spot left at the time of this writing) and another in North Wales in June. They also offer affordably-priced (because I’ve seen the gamut) workshops for drop-in writing, NaNo, chapbook editing and publishing, submissions and editorial processes, flash fiction, professional series topics, and more. And right now, they’re holding a raffle (free to enter) to win an exclusive call with editor Maria S. Picone along with their Free Feedback Friday Twitter drawings. So much going on! But let’s not forget the reason for this post – the Fall 2022 issue! It opens with a conversation with Seif-Eldeine Och, Poetry Chapbook Winner, and Mark Blackford, Chapbook Editor, and includes prose, poetry, and art by Mike Yunxuan Li, Noel Cheruto, Eileen Tomarchio, Lana Hall, Rachel Lastra, Maya Hersh, Abduljalal Musa Aliyu, Isibeal Owens, Njoku Nonso, Jessie Zechnowitz Lim, Claire Scott, Guy D’Annolfo, Biswadarshan Mohanty, Joan Kwon Glass, Taylor Yingshi, Denny Marshall, Lindsey Grant, Matina Vossou, and Kelly Sargent.
