Event :: 2022 August Poetry Postcard Festival

Early Bird Registration for the 2022 August Poetry Postcard Festival ends June 4, and registration for the event ends completely on July 4, so do not delay!

Celebrating 15 years, this event invites writers to sign up to be placed in a group. Once each group reaches 32 registrants, each receives a list of names and addresses. The goal is to write a poem a day on a postcard to the next person on the list after your own name and mail it to them. In return, you will receive a poem from each participant in your group. Writers are encouraged to start in advance of August 1 to allow time for the postcards to arrive, but it’s common to have some days go by with no card arriving and others with several cards waiting in the mailbox.

Join the August Poetry Postcard Festival

It is once again time to sign up for the August Poetry Postcard Festival! And this year’s event is a special tribute to Diana di Prima and Michael McClure.

Now in its 15th consecutive year, the concept is simple and fun: You sign up, and your name is added to a group along with 31 others. Once the group is “full,” you each get the list with names and addresses of participants in your group. The week before August, you start writing and sending your postcards (so that the first one arrives around the first of August). You write one postcard per day and send it to the person listed after your name in the group. The next day, you write another poem and send it to the next person – and so on until you go through the list. One for each day.

The idea is spontaneous writing without editing, censoring, or revision. You can use the postcard as your prompt or not. Some people choose a theme to write on for the month. The postcards vary from store bought to homemade, contemporary to vintage. It’s really wide open to your creativity, imagination, and passion. Then, throughout the month of August, you will receive poems in the mail from the others in your group.

Last year, the organizers began year-round registration – so you can actually register at any time of the year. In 2020, some participants started sending cards immediately upon registration, instead of waiting until August – and what a boost that was during the early days of the pandemic. A few ambitious writers completed their 31 cards and signed up for another group! The organizers welcome repeat participation.

There is a $15 fee which helps pay the bills and support the non-profit Seattle Poetics LAB, who organize this event as well as many others throughout the year. Registration closes July  Sign up today!

Free Story Toolbox Workshops

805 Lit + Art online lit mag not only features new and emerging writers, poets, and artists, they provide a series of Story Toolbox workshops to help writers practice and hone their craft. National Writing Project Launches Write Now Teacher Studio

The National Writing Project has long been a source of support for writing teachers (K-12+), providing programs where teacher-leaders work with local teachers on developing approaches to teaching writing as well as engaging in their own writing practice. Those who have local chapters benefit from the professional development and community programming, but now NWP is expanding that opportunity by introducing an online space for teachers to connect and collaborate with writing teacher colleagues.

Write Now Teacher Studio will open on June 3, 2021, and NWP invites teachers to join a live launch event through mobile app or the web. The Write Now Teacher Studio will let teachers connect and collaborate around specific topics of interest in their teaching, attend events about writing and teaching writing, join groups to address challenges, take courses designed by experienced writing teachers, and create or join reading and writing groups.

Mudfish Writing Workshop Goes Virtual

Mudfish founding editor Jill Hoffman leads a combined workshop of poetry and fiction in Tribeca, New York. These workshops are open to writers of all levels and are now being conducted virtually via ZOOM. Writers get to read aloud each week and give and receive honest and constructive criticism. Editors for Mudfish are also recruited from these workshops.

The Writer’s Hotel Goes Virtual for Fall 2020 Conferences

The Writer’s Hotel‘s three writing conferences will be hosted virtually in October instead of in NYC like normal this year.

The All Fiction Writers Conference will take place October 14-20. The schedule has been redesigned to offer their attendees the very best service possible. Major workshops will be capped at nine people instead of their usual fourteen.

The Nonfiction Weekend Conference will be held October 1-5. Application deadline is August 28. Driftwood Press Extends Application Deadline for Online Seminars

Good news! If you missed the April 30 deadline for Driftwood Press’s 2020 Online Seminar Series, you’re in luck! They have extended the deadline to apply to May 30. These seminars will run for five weeks starting on June 1 and ending on July 3.

The Erasure Poetry Seminar instructor is Jerrod Schwarz who teaches creative writing at the University of Tampa. This seminar features an in-depth look at the history, practices, and importance of erasure poetry. Every week students receive a video lesson, tailor-made writing prompts, and detailed feedback. The course will culminate in a Showcase Booklet of students’ work which will be made available for free download on Driftwood’s website.

The Editors & Writers Seminar is targeted towards three types of writers: writers submitting to magazines and wanting to fight through the slushpile, writers who wish to be editors of short fiction or run a magazine, and writers who wish to become better editors of their own and others’ work. The instructor will be Driftwood Press Fiction Editor James McNulty. Students receive weekly video lessons, a writing or revision assignment, a reading assignment, and detailed feedback on writing assignments.

Don’t forget that the biannual journal is open to submissions year-round and the publishing arm is currently open to submissions of novellas, graphic novels, and comic collections. They do charge a reading fee. Expedited response options available for journal submissions.

Carve Online Writing ClassesBesides being both an online and print literary magazine, Carve also offers online writing classes and online workshops. Did you know that?

They currently offer two writing classes on the Wet Ink platform: Short Story Writing: Fundamentals and Short Story Writing Techniques. Theses classes both run five weeks and are held multiple times during the year.
